New Old West is a project that was an idea in early 2018, with the intent of simply creating good music - real music - raw music; combining a taste for old and new genres of music as well as techniques of production.
Guitarist, poet, producer, singer, songwriter: Philip J. Foster, is the one man band behind the concept known as New Old West. Born on January 2, 1993, he was raised by his elderly adoptive mother and grew up listening to mostly older music, consequently having a taste for blues, rock and roll, modern indie rock, punk, old school hip hop, etc. He started playing guitar around age 11, teaching himself by playing to his favorite blues players. After his mother passed away when he was 18, Philip began studying philosophy as a way to help give him perspective during that time, which helped him develop the outlook on life and virtues that continue to inspire him every day to learn and create, and in his case he applies those values to his music. This self-education inevitably has had a big impact on his music and words. The result is a sound that transcends genre, verse that is thoughtful, poetic and rock n’ roll, raw at its core, and perpetually developing.
"I can't help but feel just a little proud of myself. I have many reasons why I believe what I believe and why I do what I do. I do believe I earned this and I am grateful for many people and things that helped me get to this point whether it was just sharing a meal or a smile, or it was offering me a roof over my head, It motivates me even more to know the progress I’ve made and how much I’ve learned, and to know that I’m not scared of what might happen if I fail because I know what it’s like to have nothing but a ton of weight on my shoulders. I do not believe I will fail. I am concerned about the condition of our country and the world but I do feel blessed that I was even given this opportunity. I am blessed that my loved ones have been safe and strong during this crazy time. I hope we all continue to be strong and persevere and do the best we can with what we are given. I eventually want to give back a lot more than I was given. I believe we all need each other in ways we are only beginning to understand." - Philip Foster, July 2020
Philip grew up in Baldwin Park, a city located in east Los Angeles, CA.
